My Story

Specializing in Ambiguous Loss

Hello. I'm Makia, a dedicated therapist with a passion for helping individuals and families navigate the complexities of ambiguous loss. I am currently pursuing my PhD to further deepen my expertise and enhance the support I offer my clients.

My Journey:

Before becoming a therapist, I was a teacher. During my teaching career, I discovered that the one-on-one relationships I built with my students were the most impactful part of their learning and growth. Realizing that I could make a significant difference in their lives propelled me to pursue a career in therapy.

Educational Background and Experience:

I earned a Master of Clinical Social Work from the University of Denver, concentrating on family systems. My professional journey has taken me to various esteemed institutions, including Boston Children’s Hospital, the Veteran Affairs Hospital & Medical Center, public and private schools, and community-based organizations. These experiences have equipped me with a diverse set of skills and perspectives.

Therapeutic Approaches:

I draw upon my training in Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), Mindfulness, and trauma-focused interventions to support my clients. My approach is always strengths-based, focusing on each individual's unique abilities and resilience.

Living and Working Abroad:

Having lived in Hamburg, Germany, for over eleven years, I have firsthand experience of the nuances of living in another country. As a parent of two multicultural children, I understand the challenges of raising a family in a foreign environment and creating a sense of belonging and community.

Dedication to Ambiguous Loss:

With over a decade of experience, I have dedicated my practice to helping individuals and families cope with the unique challenges posed by ambiguous loss. Whether due to migration, chronic illness, or other circumstances, I am here to provide the support and guidance you need to navigate these difficult times.
