Remember the Balloons by Jessie Oliveros
This book was suggested to me about a year ago, and it touched my heart then, and it still touches it now. It is a book about a grandson and his grandpa. It shows his grandpa's process of losing his memory (balloons) and how the little boy learns that even though his grandpa forgets, he, the boy, still has the balloons to hold on to. I love the use of balloons; it makes it easy for children to understand the loss of memory in an older relative. It's brilliant, beautiful, sad, heartfelt, and a must-read for any child with grandparents. It resonates with not only children but adults.

This past week has been difficult. My kids Opa and Oma are not doing well. I remind them often that let's hold on to the “balloons” we have. Even if we can't see them right now due to covid and health issues, we still have those beautiful memories. I think this book's overarching theme is so relevant for the time that we are in with a pandemic literally keeping us from our loved ones.
